An awesome directorial debut by Konkona Sen Sharma, A death in the Gunj's success lies in the fact that it was able to maintain the film's genre and the central character as a suspense for about the first hour. Then, the makers were able to go deep into portraying Shutu as the introverted teen, who's in the peak of loneliness despite many people around him.

Shutu then finding his only solace with the little girl is one of the most beautiful moments in the film.
