Gunjan Saxena:The Kargil Girl , a Netflix original film is about a female Air Force officer who heroically evacuated hundreds of soldiers during 1999 Kargil War . It's a solid and an inspirational biopic about a girl who dares to fly, fights against male domination, stereotypes and ends up breaking the traditional norms that a girl cannot fly and becomes India's first lady Air Force Officer and aspires others for the same.
Through some moving scenes the filmmaker highlights the deep-rooted problem of patriarchy.Gunjan is constantly made to realise that she is physically weaker than her male counterparts. This is not an archetypal war film .Rather this is a story about a person who wants to break free from the shackles of patriarchy.
Apart from feminist issues the film also takes a dig on jingoism.It is quite interesting to note that the filmmaker has cleverly eschewed chest thumping jingoism ,which otherwise is an integral part of most patriotic films.In one of the winning moments of the film Gunjan’s father tells her that IAF needs officers who are dedicated and efficient rather than the ones who only love to chant ‘ Jai hind’.
On the eve of Independence Day the film irresistibly reminds us of true meaning of freedom;the movie reupidates majoritarianism and inspires us to embrace inclusiveness .#HappyIndependenceDay
